Divorce--A Post for Married Christian Women

In the last 2 weeks I've learned of 3 marriages that are not going well-one is definitely heading toward divorce, another probably is, and the other couple is separated and it doesn't look good. I've debated on writing about it because I don't want to get anyone down, but sometimes it is helpful to realize marriage longevity is not a guarantee. We must work at it, and we need to live out our commitment each day. If we do it according to God's plan, our chance of success is far greater than if we subscribe to the world's plan. I come from a broken home and have known several people to share about their marriages before divorce. It is not uncommon for the wife to realize after the fact she did not show her husband respect, and if he is unsaved, whose power does he have to help him withstand the temptation of an adoring 'other' woman?

If a woman is married to an unbeliever, her goal should be to win her husband without a word, relying on her chaste behavior as Scripture teaches. What does that mean? A Christian wife should have a whole new respect for her husband that she didn't understand before getting right with God. It isn't what a man does that warrants his getting our devotion, but it is his position and God is clear on that. Therefore, a Christian wife has the power of God Almighty to help her respect and show admiration to her husband BECAUSE of Jesus Christ. He should not feel he's less of a person, a man, or a father because of God. He shouldn't lose his family to constant church involvement. Her first commitment was to her husband and that isn't negated because she comes to love God. How could that possibly entice him to seek the Lord? Respect, admiration and plentiful sex will win him over far better. I'm not saying this is a guarantee, some men are very antagonistic toward God, or are determined to cheat, lie and abandon no matter who they are married to, but I'd give it a try while praying for insight into how best serve the man you are pledged to and see what the Lord does. A wife is blessed by her submission to her husband, so if she can get out of God's way and give Him a road paved with loving kindness to work upon, the journey can become something more beautiful than we ever imagined. God is the one who 'does exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works within us'. Ladies, we are at war against evil for our husbands. We need to be on the offense to keep our men! If you are unequally yoked, let me recommend Surviving A Spiritual Mismatch. It is an inspiring book that might really help.

I'm the first to admit I don't focus on all there is to appreciate in my husband enough. He's a godly, simple man, and he doesn't ask for much. My guess is what he wants is what all of our husband's want. Showing respect can be done in small ways. For example, when he comes in the door from work, train the kids to stop what they are doing and go greet him. He's been off working to provide all day, dealing with tons of stress and difficulties. A show of our gratitude that he is home means a lot to him. We wives can be so caught up in what we're doing we often want our husbands to "see" just how much by not stopping to greet them. We busily stir and chop, narry looking up, demonstrating our feverish pace all the long day. Ladies, no matter how much we work and teach and cook and clean, we are blessed to not have to leave our home and children to deal with the myriad of onslaughts that come to a working man day in and day out. If we will see our service to our families as a privilege, it is easier to focus on our man and not ourselves. Go to God to meet the need for affirmation until there is a clear time to talk with your husband about your feelings (if you are feeling unappreciated). Often I've found many women spend a great deal of time pontificating what they lack rather than what they have. This attitude gets communicated to everyone in the house and the result is not pleasant. Show and talk about how grateful you are to have a husband who provides for you, and the kids will catch the fever.

Most men want to feel their wives value what they say, and one way we can show that is to take their advice when they take time to give it. This is not easy, but try to listen to him more than your girlfriends! A husband ignored will eventually become one of those quiet men you hear about. The wife goes on and on and he has learned his input holds no value, so he shuts up--for good.

Finally, we wives can really tear our husbands down by complaining about how little money or benefits their job provides. This is a painful thing to witness another woman do. The man is just cringing and everyone but his woman seems to notice. Ladies, if your husband isn't making enough money so you can stay home full time and not have any income generating work, do not let on you are unhappy with this situation. It is a godly wife who chooses to partner with her husband in providing as needed, knowing he wants to be able to do it himself, or knowing God is the One responsible to change his heart, without complaint. I've seen women approach this both ways and it is the wife who trusts God with her pain of having to work who shines with the love of Christ. Any time we complain we are really complaining against God, so if our husband's job doesn't provide good health benefits, we really need to take it to our Father. I've been guilty of doing this in the past, and after studying complaining with my daughter, have determined not do to so anymore. We mom's need to appreciate all God gives us through our husbands. We can't be truly thankful and complaining simultaneously!

Ladies, I hope this will encourage you to confess, roll up your sleeves, put on some sexy underwear, and love your husbands this weekend. Always remember, there is some woman who would gladly take your place should you opt to resign, and if their are children involved, you'll then have to see your husband with someone else for the rest of your life.

Whitney Houston

I've been very saddened by the news of Whitney Houston's death. It is not something I would have anticipated since her music was what I listened to many, many years ago. What I think it is that has me so sad is not just the loss of a life that could have been as beautiful as the voice God gave her, but it is recalling where I was in life when I would go on a hike and belt out "I Will Always Love You." It was before I came to Christ, so the days were long, lonely and lost. Here I am now renewed in Christ and this woman whose amazing vocals carried me through some memorable times is dead. I knew from the news online she struggled with drugs, but I don't know that I ever intervened in prayer for her. I'm not an old woman, rather young, yet each year more celebrities I once loved pass away, usually because of something they have wrongly chosen to do. Lives wasted. These times serve as a reminder that life is fleeting and fragile. God, help us to see this reality when it comes to our children as we strive to make each day count for You. Help us to guide their steps, encourage them, and seek out Your plan for them.

Computer Fun

We just got home from a wonderful little vacation. I planned to take school and hit the books as we were able; we even took the laptop for the online Latin class!

Would you believe that we had a nasty computer virus that reared it's head just before leaving for this trip though? Norton Internet Security could not remove it, even the Power Eraser...I loaded Spybot and Spyware Blaster.

Nothing.

AVG found some problems but still, there was one unsolved VIRUS. I was up for hours every night trying to get that thing off my system, when finally it was clear something drastic had to happen when I couldn't get online. Now, it's possible I needed to reauthenticate the wireless connection even though it looked like we were connected...but had I done that, the virus would have lived on ruining my sanity! I did all that could be done and finally decided to reformat the computer to it's ORIGINAL factory condition.

You in the audience know what that means.

The laptop did'NT have Carbonite online back up. I don't know why...the desktop has it and loves it. :) Well, after those 4 hrs of fitful sleep on the coach, wiping the hard drive clean, I was feverishly (and not too calmly) down to 10 mins before Latin started and the computer was not up and running.

During this critical, intense time, one child decided to turn on the jacuzzi jets SANS water. The motor upstairs could be heard and it would not go off even though the timer was not on. I thought, "Add some water fast before the motor burns up!" Who would have thought water could shoot that powerfully and that high from a bath tub????!!!! The scene was like a fire hose against a thick napkin. Water, water everywhere means something to me now- something profound, and funny, but it also strikes fear into the heart! Thankfully the Lord answered my prayer since maintenance didn't answer my call, and while water shot full force toward the wall outlet, I noticed those buttons to trip the breaker. You can see where this is going. Tripping that outlet caused a calm like when God parted the waters for Moses and the Israelites! Hallelujah!! (the chorus began)

Meanwhile, my head was popping off with the computer situation I had to go back downstairs to resolve. Time was of the essence.

These situations were uncannily messy and stressful, and a perfect test. I didn't do well staying calm, and it gave a great lead in to a discussion about God's faithfulness even when things don't go our way. Feeling bad on the inside, we drove home to see our newly installed windows. It was a wonderful picture of God's character. Even when we feel bad about ourselves, He is loving us and cheering us on if we are truly seeking to please and serve Him overall. What a lesson for mom!

Minors Drinking

This story really is a sad one, 3 young people dead and a mom going to jail. Could it have been avoided? Possibly.

1. The mom could have not served alcohol to minors
2. The driver could have had no passengers (if the other kids had refused to ride with him because he was intoxicated)

But there is something else that comes to mind. That is the reality it is critical for us as parent's to teach our children that alcohol is not something to play around with. It is just Russian Roulette given the fact so many people have a predisposition to consuming too much or making bad decisions when under it's influence. How can we know who will have trouble with it until those first drinks are taken, especially in families scarred by alcoholism in past generations? I tend to doubt kids that see adults drinking responsibly walk away with a message of "all things in moderation". In our culture, I think the message they receive is "drinking alcohol is fun and I can't wait to do it." There are no guarantees, we all know that, but few can deny alcohol has wreaked havoc on our society in many ways, so it's something to be very cautious with. It is like anything that can be addicting--do we do those things in front of children hoping they will have the self-control to moderate themselves? As Christians, how we exercise our liberties is a matter of serious prayer.

The House of Delegates passed the House version of the bill (HB1208) by a 77–23 margin yesterday, but the vote could be extremely close in the Senate.

“Please vote yes on SB 564. Right now the law is worded so vaguely that neither school officials nor parents know what is truly required when families file their annual homeschool notice. This causes conflicts every year. SB 564 will bring clarity, common sense, and uniform enforcement.”

Background

This past fall HSLDA assisted several families who were threatened with possible court action for truancy—because the local school district made unreasonable demands using a very inaccurate definition of “curriculum description.” Unfortunately, the current law contains no definition at all! Conflicts and threats will continue until we repair the flaw and explain what “curriculum description” actually means.

Yesterday I testified on behalf of SB 564 before the Senate Health and Education Committee in Richmond. The only opposing testimony came from a representative of a superintendents association who said he opposed the bill because it would make it harder, he claimed, for superintendents to do their job of looking over what homeschoolers teach. Of course, superintendents have no such authority!

Representatives of Home Educators Association of Virginia and Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers also gave important testimony in support. Bill patron Senator Dick Black reminded the committee that homeschoolers achieve outstanding results on standardized tests designed to measure academic strength.

By a vote of 9 in favor and 6 against, the committee voted to send the bill to the Senate floor. Although many homeschoolers live in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Republican Senator Harry Blevins, who represents residents of that area, voted against the bill. But showing that homeschool freedom is a bipartisan issue, two Democratic senators (George Barker and Ralph Northam) joined the other Republicans and voted in favor of the bill.

If the Senate votes in favor of SB 564, it will go to the governor’s desk for action.

Vit D Deficiency and Protein

I've been seeing some doctors recently, an orthopedic and a podiatrist. What I learned from the latter is that he sees a lot of women who are not thriving or getting over injury as they should and it turns out they are deficient in Vit D3 and they aren't getting sufficient protein. It is worthwhile to take the time and check how much protein you should be getting since it really can lead to a host of physical difficulties to be low. What my doc is doing for his Vit D naturally is to take cod liver oil. It's a great way to also get omega's. The dosage if you are low is not consistent--it was 5000 mg/day but he shoots for 3000. Unless you live around Savannah, GA or below, a good rule of thumb is to take Vit D3 from Nov-March, but do your own research. The angle of the sun plays a big part in if we CAN absorb apparently and I know where I live, this doc said we are not able to get enough this time of year.

Gluten Free Recipes

The folks at King Arthur Flour have come a long way in gluten-free products. Even though we are no longer riding that train, I take note when something good comes across my desk because the difficulties in making good tasting/textured GF products don't fade fast. The gritty factor and getting things to rise well were tough, though we were avoiding other ingredients that are mainstays of baking, so that might play into it :).

King Arthur sells a high walled bread pan that specifically gave me pause. You might want to check out their website and see if anything catches your eye. There are some rated recipes that look quite interesting. Here is their GF pumpkin muffin recipe that received 5 stars with 23 reviewers.

It is really disturbing how many scantily clad women are all over the web. We have a customizable filter I highly recommend because when you find these dangerous, non-God honoring pages, you can simply block them. For an example of what I'm talking about, go to Fox News' 411 blog or the scandalous Huffington Post entertainment pages (Fox's entertainment pages are just as bad). It is nothing but trash if you ask me. Most of the entertainment categories are full of images that I know my family doesn't need to see. As parent's, we need to guard our own eyes because our children will become like us even if we think we're hiding things from them. They see through it.

We use Bsecure's filter, but I'm sure their are others. This one has worked very well for us for over 10 years. There is a version where they block everything questionable and the one we're currently using. I think the first type is the safest so would be ideal in a family where pornography has already taken it's toll on a marriage. The second type can help keep the peace a little better though, so is better than nothing.

Above all, we need to pray and be vigilant about the Internet and our families. There is too much at stake to leave it unprotected.

Seek Ye First

In our Kay Arthur study on prayer, she points us to Matthew 6 where we are told to first seek God's kingdom, and after that everything we need will be supplied. In our culture it is far more common to first seek the advice of friends, or our spouse, or a "professional" long before we seek God's input. Oh, we might lament to Him, but do we seek to understand what aligning our will with His kingdom means within our difficulty? Do we ask and then listen, waiting?

When trouble comes, if we stop and go to God, praising who He is, recounting His power and omniscience, it immediately puts everything in perspective. When we are more interested in hallowing His name than solving our trouble, we recognize that God has a greater purpose and interest in our lives than we realize.

He cares about every detail of your life, friend! Go to Him and share your burdens and questions whether it is something life and death serious, or merely what classes to enroll your students in next year. Trust Him to communicate to you clearly if you are His child.

I've Not Been Loving My Neighbor

Have you ever had your heart broken, but in a good way? Times of learning what we are required to do as believers can break a Christian's heart. Only recently I've had the stark realization that really loving God's people means a lot more than taking them food, visiting them on occasion, or giving them gifts. As saints, we can boldly stand between God and His enemies, on His enemy's behalf. This is a strange feeling at first, and I think it's because it is unselfish. Rather than pray for our loved ones or ourselves, we are taking time to INTERCEDE between those who will not be heard by God in order to ask Him to bless them and meet their needs.

One could think, "Why should I do that, they should love Him and do it themselves." But that is not what God wants us to think. He wants us to love all He has created and give of ourselves. If you've never done it, give it a try. While riding around my neighborhood today I saw many people; there is never a shortage of people to go to God on behalf of.

We have so many promises from God about Him answering our prayers if they are from a sincere heart that is washed pure by the blood of Jesus Christ. He is obliged to answer because He said He would. His own word binds Him, and we should not shirk back like He does not know us. It is because of Jesus Christ we can grab the garment of our heavenly Father and implore Him to help us and others. He knows us, and the more we spend time with Him, the more we'll know Him.

"Dear Delegate,

The idea of non-public schooled children participating in public school sports is one that 24 OTHER STATES of our country have already adopted with NO repercussions, NO outcries, and has proven to be a smooth and positive experience! Virginia has one of the highest populations of homeschoolers... it is long overdue.

You MAY receive "form letters" from the Virginia PTA with claims that are innacurate, invalid and inflammatory. Most of the public schooled kids out here would love to see their fellow homeschooled neighbors be a part of their team. My son (who is a homeschooler that attends private paid classes) is wanted by his local High School's football AND baseball coaches. The boys at this school played public ball with my son for years, they know him, and want his talent on their team. The FACT is these kids want to WIN, the coaches want to WIN, and they want access to ALL kids in their community to make the BEST WINNING teams they can have. This is a POSITIVE for EVERYONE involved. THEY ARE NOT concerned with the bureauocracy.

Additionally, our familiy pays the SAME portion of tax dollars that our public schooling neighbors pay, yet THEY are able to participate in the perks that money provides. Because we choose to exercise our legal right to provide a more unique education opportunity for our child, We are NOT able to access these perks.

THAT is not a level playing field.

One can only imagine the information given this poor child during the 2 hrs of questioning. There really aren't words for this sort of thing. Between this situation and a sexual touching issue dismissed in my local area at a nearby elementary school (by a school employee toward a child around this age), I can't see how people entrust their children to strangers all day, every day. Today I actually listened to a parent lament how in her 6 year old sons class his epi pen is stored up far too high for him to reach it in the classroom, and not only that, but he is not allowed to have it with him everywhere. The mom has struggled continually to have this situation remedied, and was told a school employee would keep up with expiration dates etc....well, mom was helping recently and checked the classroom pen, it was months expired. I mentioned home schooling to her, which her mother already had mentioned...

How is it parent's are brainwashed into thinking that it is the right thing to do to give their kids over for over 14,000 hrs of their life to other people to educate them? The lie that parent's alone are incapable is appalling. Parent's need to get educated on how well home schooled children perform even if their parent didn't graduate HIGH SCHOOL. It does not take any special training to do a great job teaching your children. Love is a powerful motivator and there are resources that are scripted and hold your hand right through the process. As long as the parent can read, they can teach. Not only that, but there are MANY support groups, co-ops, online classes available to help with the educational process. Be brave, do what is best for your child and bring them home!

May God bless parent's who have no choice but to put their kids in public school due to divorce or a death, and may He bless and protect those children.

Everyday please call Senator Stanley and Garrett's office in Richmond strongly urging them to withdraw SB 674 because it completely undermines two years of effort to get HB1 ratified. VA PTA and Sports

Here is a link to write to express your disdain over the VA PTA sending out a letter in opposition to VA homeschooled students participating in sports. They say it is a privilege that should only be for their students. I wonder how their programs would be if we did not have to pay taxes into helping their students go to school?

It would appear homeschoolers help public school kids, but they are unwilling to return the kindness (not that we have a choice with taxes). Are only public schooled children motivated to perform well by sports? Do public school parents not care about society in general benefiting from children participating in sports?

I think we should do our part and send a note saying just why it is ridiculous to keep homeschoolers out when we are paying into the system but taking nothing from it at this point. And for the record, I do not plan to have my children participate in anything with public school children. There are reasons we have chosen to home educate.

Intercessory Prayer

I wish I could write a wonderful post on intercessory prayer; suffice to say I'm so blessed by what Kay Arthur is teaching me. For this reason I want to share an idea she put in her study, "Lord, Teach Me to Pray".

Pray Colossians 1:9-12 aloud, and wherever the word "you" is, insert the name of someone you wish to pray for. It is beautiful.

As the Lord's Prayer models, when we start and end our prayers to God with praise and reminding Him of what He has already done (Creation, parting the Red Sea, delivering Israel from the Egyptians, raising Lazarus from the dead, making the oil last for a week...), it puts us in a humble, quiet, awe-filled, hope-filled, state of mind.

The above statement is from this article, and it really is a bit bittersweet if you ask me, but I'm certainly thankful for the reunion. It is the best ending given the circumstances!

It is an intriguing reality how God designed the family to be so important to us throughout our lives. I love my sisters, and even though we are rather different, the closeness we share is priceless. In several weeks we will go away together to celebrate sisterhood.

This is something we work on here at home continually: loving each other and being close, because I want to pass on what I saw with my Mom and what I've had with my sisters. I prayed for at least 2 girls for this very reason!

Growing up my closest-in-age sister and I shared a very tight relationship. We had our own friends, but there was a caring and kindness we both depended on. We're about 2.5 yrs apart, just like my oldest 2 girls, and helping my girls be best friends has been a blessed process. My other sister is 9 yrs my senior, so growing up she was always someone to really admire. I will forever recall how beautiful she looked going to work with her long, blond hair, beautifully manicured fingernails, high heels and maroon driving gloves. She loved us younger girls but it wasn't until we were older that our friendship and dependence grew into a mutual relationship. Here we all are, me the only one under 40, excited about starting a new annual event of 'sister time'!

Let me encourage you to foster a loving relationships in your home, for as the statement at the top says, we are always thinking about family. The pain of distance from loved ones never seems to fade. But God is faithful and powerful, and if you have a relationship, as many do, where reconciliation is not possible, go to God! We are only told to be at peace with all men as far as it depends on us---sometimes it is not our doing. He can bring beauty from the ashes. ♥

Finally, Mr. Obama, where were Muslims on Sept. 11th, 2001? If they weren't flying
planes into the World Trade Center , the Pentagon or a field in Pennsylvania killing
nearly 3,000 people on our own soil, they were rejoicing in the Middle East. No one
can dispute the pictures shown from all parts of the Muslim world celebrating on
CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and other cable news networks that day. Strangely,
the very "moderate" Muslims who's asses you bent over backwards to kiss in Cairo,
Egypt on June 4th were stone cold silent post 9-11. To many Americans, their silence
has meant approval for the acts of that day.

And THAT, Mr. Obama, is the "rich heritage" Muslims have here in America.
Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the Barbary Pirates. They were Muslim.

And now we can add November 5, 2009 - the slaughter of American soldiers at Fort Hood by a Muslim major who is a doctor and a psychiatrist who was supposed to be

Movie Night

I was blessed to go over a friend's tonight for dinner, a movie and some super tasty dessert. What made it really fun was the fact I wore my pj's and slippers and took my stuffed dolphin along, for effect :). The featured production was "The Help". I'm sure some of you reading this have read the book; I haven't. But watching the movie I can tell it's a book that would be read in one sitting.

I'm thankful to have been born when I was. Praise God Jesus came to reconcile all of us to God the Father.

It is a hard movie to watch at times. Just terrible things, but it is important as a remembrance of what the world should never be like again. And the story is woven with some laughs along the way, which is always appreciated. ♥

When Homogenization Was All the Rage

While shaking my non-homogenized milk tonight, with less than stellar results come drinking time, my thoughts went to the days of yore when homogenization was cutting edge. I'm sure many folks were thrilled to end the time consuming ritual of shaking. Perhaps some missed the cream on top, maybe the kids or those industrious souls who used the cream, but the simplicity of opening the container and pouring saved parents a little time. That is something we all try to find every now and again.

Still today, we find people like me: a modern mom striving for wholesome, simple food, toying with rejecting ready-to-pour milk and generally shunning pre-ground flour. Isn't it interesting how trends cycle? What was once a happy convenience is scorned as evil, when really, buying pre-sliced white bread seemed so great once upon a time. ;-) Isn't there a saying about sliced bread and how wonderful it is?

My point is that finding milk that is as natural as can be without any risk of harmful bacteria means some change is in order. Aside from that second job someone has to work, there might be a need for a willingness to cast off the shackles of homogenization. I don't know... While I've often dreamed of going raw, it isn't something our family is going to adopt, so I do have a choice when it comes to this. What I've narrowed it down to is whole milk that doesn't need any added vitamins to be 'legal' and is quickly pasteurized so the risk of harmful bacteria is gone but the nutrients are largely kept in tact. Wanting to be even more "back to nature" than the glass bottle and previously mentioned benefits, I went with the non-homogenized today. But drinking chunky milk was a little difficult. I told myself that it smelled good, so it wasn't rotten, but I can't be the only one who can flash back to a dreadful memory of dumping milk only to find the consistency of cottage cheese and a smell akin to vomit. EEEwwwww! Remember that sippy cup long since rolled under the bed? Like last month? Why didn't we all have a 'don't look just toss' policy from day one?

I might have romanticized shaking milk because I don't see my kids successfully working that dog and pony show. I'd really like for them to experience the cream line some and think I'd better look into homogenization and if it impacts the nutritional content. Maybe I should also look up shaking techniques.

He Can Be the Favorite

One of our children had been struggling with more of an attitude problem than anyone else for.....a while. I'd say 7 years, give or take a year, but my husband might disagree by 5 or 6 years. Maybe it is because I was the recipient of the attitude while he grew in favor. Deep down I think it hurt that this child didn't seem as close to me as her Dad, but then a friend made a comment about how good it is for a daughter to be especially close to her Papa. I hadn't thought of that, but talked to the man about it and his response showed me that Dads don't necessarily mind being someone's favorite (though he says he isn't but come on, they are 2 peas in a pod!). Just gaining that little bit of perspective really changed my heart on the matter. But that didn't do anything for the child's steady, biting words.

What did change them was when her adored father spoke to her about the problem in a way that left little doubt he would ensure his wife was spoken to correctly for now on. (He has a gentle, insightful way about him) From that conversation forward, our home has been a different place. No more do I get tense when talking to this beloved offspring, fearing her terrible response. It is incredible how a child can change, on a dime seemingly, when a person they hold in HIGH regard places boundaries on them. This daughter is so much happier, and the under the surface anger she and I were dealing with has dissipated. This has proven to me that how we treat others really does get woven into the fabric of our disposition. We can't be horrible to one person and loving to another and not have the ugly shine through in some capacity.

May God, who is all powerful, all knowing, the giver and taker of life, bless your homes with people who sacrifice for, and love one another, unconditionally. And may He grant us wisdom to teach our children how to love not only their siblings, but also their parents! Praising God for His might and thanking Him for hearing our prayers, Amen!

The Butcher Now Has A Full Service Deli

Well, I'm a sucker for a small town butcher shop. Granted, I did like it when it was crowded with just 3 customers, but now that it's expanded in size, the line of products has nicely grown as well. Not only do I get a little milk each week, we get our spreading butter, olive oil, some chicken and pork, some vegetables, and occasionally even ice cream, and now I can add Boar's Head deli meats and cheeses if I want!

The whole feel of supporting a local family is terrific, in addition to quality food at competitive prices and the satisfaction of supporting small, often local, farms. I have yet to purchase something I'm dissatisfied with. I know I've written about the butcher before, but the Deli is new and I wanted to say that it is still great to shop there!

I've only recently learned we are supposed to pray to God rather than Jesus. This gives me pause every time I say it. How can a Bible believing Christian not know this after more than 15 years? I don't know. My husband knew it and prays properly, and I think I generally do, too, but now that I know I'm supposed to pray to God, it feels different. I've known we have access to God because of Jesus Christ, so praying 'because of Jesus' makes sense. Anyway, realizing the attributes of the Godhead, I don't know why it should feel as different as it does to pray Biblically except that clearly obedience has rewards we might not understand or anticipate. I've got more of a sense of awe and His power, and with that comes confidence in the God of all--El Elyon.

Curing a UTI Without Antibiotics

I reopened comments incase someone reading this has a better answer because quite honestly, it would be a lot easier to just get a prescription. I think a UTI has found it's way into my life, and since taking time for phone calls is enough of a pain, calling and going to a doctor is really not high on my list. Not to mention, I don't like to take prescriptions. The last one I was put on broke me out in a rash (Vit D2 which I THOUGHT was D3...).

Anyway, I've been doing the following with improvement and thought I'd share incase you want to do a ton throughout the day, for days, to try and improve naturally ☺.

Started with:
Echinacea/Elderberry tincture, 30 drops a couple times a day
extra probiotics, krill oil (usual)
cranberry pills with vit c and probiotics (start the day with 4)

Moved on to include: (decreased Echinacea)
4 drops Yarrow tincture 4 times/day
One time only did dropperful of Goldenseal, worst tasting tincture ever)
1/2 tsp baking soda in water
Kidney/liver detox pills (80% milk thistle) once a day

Added in:
Stinging Nettle, 20-30 drops once a day
MMS (6 drops)
Didn't do detox this day or baking soda

From first sign:
little to no sugar, caffeine, tea or coffee
lots of water

In general my understanding is that it's not wise to do too many herbs at once, so I space them out and wait to see if anything is changing after a day and a half to 2 days. Then I'll add something else in and see how that works, sometimes dropping what I started with, sometimes keeping it.

I'm thinking at this point Nettle, Probiotics, Cranberry, MMS and kidney/liver detox are staying, with another drink of baking soda tomorrow.

Doesn't it seem easier than antibiotics? :D

Monday Kitchen Time

I'm sure I'm not the only mom who has to gear up for multiple people working in the kitchen, especially if you also have a VERY small kitchen and several children eager to cook.

This afternoon I discovered some whole grain bread with chia seed that was in need of eating, so my project was bread pudding with whiskey sauce.

My middle girl had a playdate in the midst of her schooling this afternoon, so during a quick break my oldest whipped together some cranberry orange muffins from a mix. We've never used Krusteaz, but wow, it is really tasty and sometimes you just want a quick treat. We used the muffins for a snack together once the school table was cleared.

Prior to realizing the butter was frozen, I'd offered to my oldest to make cookies (hence the need for a quick muffin), and I didn't want to renig on that once her work was finished. So, rather than let the soft butter go to waste, the girls mixed up soft oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with currants. The batter is resting right now, which is good since the bread pudding is in the oven with thawing sloppy joe!

Which brings me to dinner. Have you ever craved a chili cheese dog but don't have chili or any onions to make some (and clearly running to the store 5 minutes away is out of the question)? ☺ How about tossing some sloppy joe on top of that healthy dog with a mound of freshly shredded sharp cheese?! YUM! My youngest is going to try to cook the dogs on the wood stove shortly ♥.

Monday's are such great days to get a good school day in, but also a great day to kick off baking for the week. Have a good night!

While searching for a free way to view the last bit of the Bronco's game, I picked up a nasty computer virus that would not allow my programs to run. Thankfully there was a way around it and I got to the Spybot website, which I've not used in over 8 years. I think the Lord must have been helping me remember it. Anyway, Norton was running but was taking forever and Spybot found the problems and fixed them on the first try. I'm so thankful that Norton blocked multiple other attempts the hacker bug tried, including a Trojan Horse, but you can't beat the speed and accuracy of Spybot. Note: cheaper antivirus like AVG might not work well with Spybot because programs like that don't recognize Spybot as helping, they think it is a threat. Norton has no problem so my guess is anything you pay for will be fine with Spybot (which is free but asks for donations and I'll be sending one from our other computer tomorrow!)

Sweet Friends

The saying, "When God closes a door, He always opens a window" is a comfort, don't you think? It is true, though sometimes the window is shaped differently than we might think. And sometimes the door has to close in order for us to take time to see the window. I think it is also possible that at times we need the window more than any door, and when God closes the door He is truly blessing us.

I've been going through a time of being a bit down, for various reasons. Probably over thinking certain situations and just dwelling on feelings of insecurity, but whatever the root cause, I'm combating it by spending more time in the Word and making an effort to get out to help others. My thinking is that the more my focus is off myself, the better I'll feel.

Today the girls and I went to see some of our friends at the Assisted Living because there are a few God has continually put on my mind since we last saw them on Christmas Eve. Can I make a suggestion if you are going through a time of feeling alone, or misunderstood, or are without friends, or just simply depressed? Find people who really are alone and give them your time. The reward is so rich, I can't really put it down in words adequately. I love the people who live at this place, and spending time with them is anything but a chore for any of us. They are giving back to me...us, and I don't know if they realize how much.

Mixed Bag Friday

I hope everyone had a blessed Friday. My day was good overall, busy as usual with classes for the kids. We had a morning meeting and it is hard to believe it is time to start thinking about next year's classes, but this is in fact the time of year when such decisions need to be made! It just comes faster all the time ☺. I'm looking forward to our vision for next year though so am excited to officially start getting organized.

In other news, sadly it seems our faithful dog is suffering from the early onset of either mini strokes or seizures. It is hard to say exactly which, but I'll be calling the vet soon to see if there is anything we should/can do. He is getting old and these episodes will likely increase from what friends have said. Poor buddy dog.

On the prayer study front--today we looked at the Lord's Prayer in Matt 6 and took it apart verse by verse. Since it is the model to use, it is good to memorize, though the intent isn't to repeat it by rote. This is the method used before everything was written down apparently; learn a song with the principles in it to recall the content.

According to the model of how to pray, we're supposed to pray to God the Father, not Jesus. Kay was showing us that we pray to God because of Jesus. Jesus is called the intercessor (1 Tim 2:5) so this is consistent (we who follow Christ are all called saints in Scripture and we cannot fill this role given to Christ of interceding to God, nor can Jesus' mother, Mary). I looked at many verses today that give the names of God, and they all reflect He is the One we should go to and rely on. It got me thinking, when I say, 'Dear Lord' am I thinking God the Father or God the Son? It can sound ridiculous on one hand, but on the other hand, isn't there a right and wrong way to do a lot of things? Does sincerity save anyone or is there a right way to have a saving relationship with God? This is what I keep going back to. Just because our culture has basically no standards and maybe in my Christian walk it seemed that just getting saved was 'the' goal, doesn't mean there isn't more to learn and a way to be more pleasing to God with my life. Degrees to so many things in life, right? Stuff I'm chewing on and it is exciting because I WANT to be close to the Lord. REALLY close. And Kay says if we really apply ourselves to this study, since it has us in God's word, we WILL grow!!!

Improved Ovaltine

This might be old news, but it is new to me so I'm sharing it!

Ovaltine now only requires 2 tablespoons of mix per glass, rather than the 1/4 cup it used to take ;-), and there are no artificial dyes in it. Just for the record, unlike most cocoa mixes, there isn't any corn syrup either. I LOVE hot chocolate and the occasional glass of chocolate milk, and Ovaltine is a great way to go (because I'm just not in the habit of using cocoa and sugar to make drinks). If you like vitamins and minerals in your sweet treats, pick up some today!

Learning to Love Leviticus

There is a lengthy article, but worth reading, on Bible.org with the title I've used for this post. Here is an excerpt I like very much from it. You can see from the length of this the entire post is huge, but it is good. Leviticus is in the Bible for a reason, right? This is a response to one point on why folks don't read it. And the author makes points that have me shouting, AMEN!

(1) Leviticus is boring, it is not exciting enough.

Dull after all the excitement of Genesis and Exodus. My children would probably say of the Book of Leviticus, “That’s boring.” Adults are more sophisticated about how they put it, but they mean the same thing. A young Jewish man, after hearing my analogy that Leviticus was like liver and onions, responded, “I like liver and onions better.”

My first response to this criticism of Leviticus is not to deny the charge. If I had to choose between reading the exciting narratives in Genesis or Exodus and the levitical codes I would quickly opt for reading in the books of Genesis and Exodus. Compared to other portions of the Bible Leviticus is dull.

My second response is that our culture has concluded that anything which is not entertaining is not worth listening to. The media has the task of grabbing a person’s attention, of taking them from whatever they are doing and setting their eyes and their minds on the printed page or the television screen. They do this in competition with other media, trying to do the same thing. And so we have come to the conclusion that we deserve to have all communication be entertaining and exciting.

I would like to suggest that in most (not all) cases the level of drama and hype is directly related to the irrelevance of what we are watching. You have to spice up the kinds of things we see in the media because they have little value, other than entertainment. On the other hand, the greatest and most significant communications of history have not been particularly entertaining. The Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, or the Constitution of the United States are not written to entertain us. If we want to be entertained we turn to writings which begin, “once upon a time,” and end “happily after.” If we want to be informed about things vital to the present and to eternity, we most often must set aside our desire for entertainment.

How many of you go to the Richardson Public Library and check out the city code book for entertaining reading? No one does, but they do read the city codes very carefully if they plan to build a house in Richardson. The Texas Driver’s Manual is not great entertainment either, but anyone who wants to get their driver’s license had better study it well.

The Book of Leviticus is a book of regulations, regulations concerning how men are to relate to God and to their neighbors. Failure to observe these regulations can lead to death, and has eternal implications. Thus, the very form and content of the Book of Leviticus, which in the past may have caused us to avoid the book, is that which signals us to the vitally important communication from God which is contained in this book. No law book should be taken lightly, especially one which comes from God.

God's Holiness

Since yesterday's Bible study on prayer, where we focused on the holiness of God, I've been thinking a lot about how I approach the Lord. I've hoped to use this study on what God says about prayer to teach my children the right way to pray. Not by formal instruction, but by modeling it in our prayer time together. This topic of holiness was also a good springboard into discussing appetites. What we expose ourselves to feeds the appetites we will have. It became apparent during our study that I have been guilty of approaching the Lord too casually at times, when His word reveals His holiness requires something else. So I ask myself, and discuss with my children, is what we watch, what we read, the music we listen to, the styles of clothing we endorse---are these things revealing an understanding of the holiness of the God we serve and encouraging an attitude that understands that, or is the opposite happening? In our culture, we need to be vigilant to protect our vision of God as holy. He is God Almighty, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and End, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Omniscient... He is the Creator. He creates and He levels, He gives life and He takes it. And His word is a precious gift, to be handled in a way that shows we understand the Holy One who gave it.

It's been a good study so far! I'll keep you posted on more!

Bible Study on Prayer

Today was our first Kay Arthur Bible study on prayer. I'm really excited about this endeavor. We looked at how God is holy and how there is a right way to approach Him. It was interesting looking at an example in Leviticus 10 of two men who approached the Lord incorrectly and were killed on the spot. We don't see that today so much, but I suspect we miss out on a lot due to the casual nature we come before Him with. The goal of the study is to help us grow more intimate with the Lord as we explore prayer according to His word. There is such power in the Word of the Lord!

Crock Pot BBQ/Sloppy Joe-finished now HA HA

This is a new recipe we all loved, including my youngest who finds bought Sloppy Joe unpalatable. I'm sorry I posted part of this earlier today. My time was suddenly cut short and I didn't realize this posted :). This is from Easy Slow Cooker by Barbara Jones.

3 lbs ground beef (I used 2 lbs of beef and 1 lb venison)
1 lg onion finely chopped (goes fast in food processor)
1 T minced garlic (I just did 3 or 4 cloves)
2 ribs celery
1/4 c packed brown sugar (could probably use sucanat but I didn't)
3 1/2 T prepared mustard
1 T chili pdr
1 1/2 c ketchup (HFCS free)
3 T Worcestershire sauce (good luck finding a healthy version of this, I still used it) :)

Brown meat, garlic and onion in a very large skillet and drain, or just use one of those spoons with holes in it (for getting fat off of cooled soup or stock) to ladle it into the crock.

Combine celery, brown sugar, mustard, chili pdr, ketchup and Worcestershire in sprayed, large crock pot. Stir meat into this.

Cover and cook on low for 6 hrs, 7 at most.

You could easily add some ground flax seed or carrots to this for more health; I've done it both ways.

This makes a ton, freeze the leftovers!

Beauty of A Day

She spied the first white flurry of 2012 out her kitchen window while preparing the evening's crock pot meal. Able to fully embrace the excitement of the moment, the mother turned to her son, who was diligently working on grammar, and loudly announced, "Get your coats on! It's flurrying!" Screams of joy ensued while 3 giddy bodies swarmed through the house, coming from all directions. In moments, jubilant children twirled and ran amidst the bodies of tiny angels, soaking in all that is beautiful about childhood. A boy ran up to proclaim, "God answered my prayer!"

And a mother gave thanks to God for the ability to keep her children young and innocent while warming cocoa on the stove. With dinner warming and lunch cooking, she watches eager learners play together in the middle of a day, free and happy, as it should be.

What's in Fast Food Chicken? (Hint: It’s NOT Chicken)

Frying chicken is fairly simple, if a little messy. You dip pieces of chicken into a mix of egg and milk, roll them around in flour and spices, then cook the chicken in sizzling hot oil until the pieces are brown, crispy and delicious.

But wait! Don’t forget to add a dash of dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent made of silicone that is also used in Silly Putty and cosmetics.

Now add a heaping spoonful of tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), which is a chemical preservative and a form of butane (AKA lighter fluid). One gram of TBHQ can cause “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse," according to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives. Five grams of TBHQ can kill you.

Sprinkle on thirteen other corn-derived ingredients, and you're only about twenty shy as many ingredients as a single chicken nugget from McDonald’s. And you were using pulverized chicken skin and mechanically reclaimed meat for your chicken, right?

No one in his or her right mind would cook chicken like this. Yet every day, hoards of Americans consume these ingredients in Chicken McNuggets, which McDonalds claims are “made with white meat, wrapped up in a crisp tempura batter.”
However chicken only accounts for about 50% of a Chicken McNugget. The other 50% includes a large percentage of corn derivatives, sugars, leavening agents and other completely synthetic ingredients, meaning that parts of the nugget do not come from a field or farm at all. They come from a petroleum plant. Hungry?

Scariest perhaps is the fact that this recipe is a new and improved, “healthier” Chicken McNugget launched in 2003 after a federal judge called the deep-fried poultry bites “a McFrankenstein creation of various elements not utilized by the home cook.” Also terrifying is the fact that these McFrankenuggets are overwhelmingly marketed to children who love their fun shapes and kid-friendly size.

While McDonald’s is of course the poster child for fast food ire, if you look at the nutritional information for chicken at any fast food restaurant, the ingredient list will be dozens of items longer than the egg, flour, chicken and oil recipe you might use at home.

Eating fast food is a habit, but it is one that you can break? No doubt you rarely plan to have a delicious meal at Arby’s for dinner, a lingering lunch at Carl’s Jr. or a special breakfast at the Burger King in the airport. It just happens. You are late, tired, hungry, broke, or all of the above. You have no time, and you must find something to eat before you crash. All of a sudden a bright, friendly sign beckons from the side of the road: Drive-through!

In five minutes you are happily chowing down on an inexpensive, filling meal. But don’t be fooled – the true cost of fast food does not come out of your wallet, but out of your body, your health, and your years on this earth.

You can break the unhealthy fast food habit: educate yourself about the true ingredients of fast food items, plan ahead for your meals, carry healthy snacks like nuts to ward off hunger and cook healthy chicken recipes at home. Convince yourself that fast food is the most disgusting stuff on the planet and is harmful to you and to those you love. After reading this, that shouldn’t be too hard.

Full ingredient list for a Chicken McNugget (from McDonald’s website):
White boneless chicken, water, food starch-modified, salt, seasoning (autolyzed yeast extract, salt, wheat starch, natural flavoring (botanical source), safflower oil, dextrose, citric acid, rosemary), sodium phosphates, seasoning (canola oil, mono- and diglycerides, extractives of rosemary). Battered and breaded with: water, enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yellow corn flour, food starch-modified, salt, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, calcium lactate), spices, wheat starch, whey, corn starch. Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness). Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.

Banana Tea Cake

Do you ever have a bunch of bananas in the freezer, planning to make bread? Recently I had enough for a triple batch of banana bread, but I wanted to make something healthier and old fashioned. I hope you like it.

NOTE: I made this as a triple batch and had to adjust as I went, so now I'm trying to put together this recipe for one loaf. I'll test it out soon, but am anxious to share with you now, so here goes! Just shoot for a thickness of batter like any quick bread.

Ingredients:
3 cups fresh milled flour (2 1/2 cups bought flour)
1/3 cup quick cooking oats
3 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
3 TBSP oil
1/2 cup 100% prune juice
1/4 cup milk (or all juice if you want non dairy)
1 cup mashed bananas
2/3 cup honey (I used sage)
1 egg
1/8 cup ground flax seed (optional)

Mix together honey and egg until smooth, then stir in oil, juice, milk and banana. In a separate bowl mix flour, baking powder and baking soda (the soda is to neutralize the honey a bit, could just do a pinch or so), then add to liquid mixture. If it is too thin, which is probably will be, add the 1/3 cup of oats. For added fiber, add 1/8 cup ground flax seed. If mixture looks more watery than thick, you could add another 1/3 cup oats...just play with it.

Bake in loaf pan 350 degrees until knife comes out clean, which will be around an hour or so. Start checking after 55 minutes. The loaf will brown less if you cook it at 325 degrees but it will probably take over an hour, maybe 70 minutes?? Next time I make it I'm going to do the lower temp.

The President's Respect Shown in Pictures

One problem with public housing is that the residents are not the owners.

The people that live in the house did not earn the house, but were loaned the property from the true owners, the taxpayers.

Because of this, the residents do not have the "pride of ownership" that comes with the hard work necessary.

In fact, the opposite happens and the residents resent their benefactors because the very house is a constant reminder that they themselves did not earn the right to live in the house. They do not appreciate the value of the property and see no need to maintain or respect it in any way.
The result is the same whether you are talking about a studio apartment or a magnificent mansion full of priceless antiques. If the people who live there do not feel they earned the privilege, they will make this known through their actions.

What do all these pictures have in common?

These pictures all show a basic disrespect for The White House and its furnishings.

The Resolute Desk was built from the timbers of the HMS Resolute and was a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes. It is considered a national treasure and icon of the presidency.

The White House furnishings should be so revered that the posture of those in leadership should clearly display the understanding of those furnishings. The measure of a man is seen by his actions, in public and private. Using anything and everything for a foot rest shows no class.

I sure hope people are courageous enough to admit their mistake and vote for someone else in 2012. The brazen disrespect and arrogance shown in these photos really makes me sick. While we're still free (even though he is Mr. Watchdog), I'm saying it.

Having A Rough Time?

There are days that are just sort of rough, ya know? Maybe you have your 'friend' visiting, maybe you've been eating too much sugar, possibly not sleeping enough, maybe a child that lives with you is hurting your feelings, maybe family issues that are out of your control are for some reason, upsetting today. If you happen to be reading this and I'm hitting on something resonating inside you, remember, you aren't alone. God loves you. This too shall pass, and the sun will come up in the morning, even if you aren't feeling sunny.

When I get down, it almost always coincides with the womanly time or not spending time in God's word on a regular basis. It's during these stretches it is best to avoid big decision making or heart to heart talks! Perspective really does change a lot of feelings, and so does sleep. ☺

Evangelism Idea-Is There A Witnessing Book You Love?

There is a book my husband loves and has read at least 10 times. A man he worked with gave it to him when he was a young college student as a witnessing tool, and God did in fact use the book to bring my husband to repentance.

A few years ago Michael bought a case of these books for a great price, and ever since we've been giving them out to men who cross our path. Recently it hit me that nearly 100% of the technicians we have come to our home are men and we usually give them a copy of the book...then I thought maybe someone reading this is looking for a practical, easy way to share Christ with the men He brings through their door!

It works into the conversation really well after the work is finished to just hand the book over, or have it in a little gift bag with a homemade jam or something (even drawn pictures from your kids with a Bible verse---people gave me those when I delivered pizza in college and they made an impact) and say, "My husband really loves this book and he always wants me to share it with others. Thank you so much for your help today."

I've yet to get someone who doesn't want it or looks like they think I'm weird. My guess is many men need some encouragement or guidance along the way, and it coming in such a casual form from another man (really), is safe.

I'm sure it would work with a gender neutral book you've read as well, maybe something like More Than A Carpenter. Just hand it over and say something like, "Thank you for your help today. I'd like to give you a gift."

It could even be a Bible. Just watch the font size of the gift Bibles. CBD has an outreach Bible meant for distribution and while the opening info is great for someone coming to understand what it means to be saved, the actual Bible text is 9 or 10 pt font and set close together.

As happens around this time of year, the kitchen is being completely re-organized. Pantry space is evaluated, all the cabinet functions are considered with fresh eyes, and even the garage storage is put in play.

In November we always end up re-organizing the toys and bedrooms in preparation for Christmas and to save what is left of mom's sanity.

Over the summer there is training in various chores, people advance to higher levels of helping, and of course, we organize afresh for the coming school year.

When we aren't actively re-organizing, I'm thinking of how to improve the situation and use of space. Going to sleep is usually accompanied by new shelves or cabinets being moved around in my head, miraculously solving the space issue. Invariably, these are high cabinets or shelves because I'm painfully aware we aren't using height to our fullest advantage. At night, I'm emboldened to install soaring processed trees with reckless abandon. But in the daylight, my trees have withered since the shrubs are less expensive. It's not that I couldn't get something costly in theory, but I'm panic stricken over spending on certain items because their use changes so often...and what if it doesn't perform how it's supposed to and I'm stuck with some massive piece of furniture that won't fit but one place?!

The point in all this is that it has finally struck me like a bolt of lightening what the problem is, or rather, WHO the problems ARE.

Which really means, mom hasn't spent enough time teaching people how to maintain the vision of order. It is so time consuming to stand over someone for weeks on end to make sure they do a task correctly, and what about those doing other tasks out of site? There are bodies roaming all over, like ants at a picnic, loading, unloading, folding, carrying, mopping etc. Even so, tomorrow you can know that one man and 3 children will be having a kitchen tour and tutorial. It's not that my way is best, but it is definitely better ☺.

Encouraging the Little Ones

Our youngest child is one of those sweet children that generally obeys immediately with a cheerful, "Yes, mama?" or "I'd be happy to!" He is like his papa in that way. A boy who loves others and shows them respect with a helpful, thoughtful tone.

Today after rushing to do what he was asked with his usual kindness, I stopped him to look down into his adorable face so I could praise him. There is no way to communicate how I saw his body rise up toward my downward turned face. He was beaming as I spoke truth into his little soul.

I was reminded again how important it is to stop what I'm doing, look in my children's faces, and praise them. One day I won't have the opportunity. They will be grown and gone, or I'll be old and feeble, or they will have stopped being a captive audience to my words.

God, help us capture the glittering moments that want to slip through our hands too quickly, before we watch men and women walk out our doors.

Squash Soup

The store had a plethora of Butternut squash, so Mr. Shopper came home with one last week. Wanting to do something different than usual (not that we eat loads of squash), it was turned into a rich soup.

I received a new dough whisk for Christmas that made a high artisan-style loaf with little effort.

The whisk produced a lighter, fluffier texture than I get with the Kitchen Aid.

With the cold temperatures we're having tonight, it was the perfect frontrunner to the evening. We'll be hearing more of the book our oldest is writing downstairs by a cozy fire.

Recipe for Butternut Squash Soup-

One butternut squash
6 tsp onion
5 TBSP butter
water/bouillon or broth to equal 3 cups
4 oz. softened cream cheese
black pepper, cayenne pepper, marjoram

Roast halved squash face down on a baking stone or sheet at 350 degrees for about 40-50 mins (till very soft and turning slightly brown)
Set aside to cool while sauteeing 6 tsp red onion (finely diced) in 5 TBSP butter. While this is cooking, use a food processor to fully puree the cooked squash. When onion is soft add 3 cups broth or 3 cups water and 4 tsp bouillon (or 4 cubes) and bring to a boil. I used rabbit broth plus bouillon since the broth didn't look like I'd made it strong enough. Add 1/2th tsp marjoram, 1/4th tsp black pepper, 1/8th tsp cayenne pepper. Reduce heat so it is NOT boiling and add pureed squash, whisking gently to incorporate. Do not boil with squash in the broth. Add about 4 oz softened cream cheese that you've worked with spoons to smooth (or you can put the cream cheese in the food processor). Cream cheese could be increased if you want or omitted altogether. Could also add a touch of half and half or heavy cream, but I don't think it needs any thickening. The cream increase could cut the heat a bit, but only one of us thought this was a little hot from the cayenne. ☺

Second Semester!

I'll admit that my children, especially the 2 oldest, have motivated me to be marginally excited about break being over. It isn't that I don't love doing school with them, because I genuinely do. But we had a Christmas break that really embodied all I've always intended break to be, and it is hard to give it up. I'm sure some of you can relate!

We had such a terrific time celebrating all the blessings 2011 brought our way. It was a day of exotic foods, cooking, organizing, playing games, bike riding, watching movies and praying together.

Now we are finally embarking on making some shadow boxes to remember Grammy by. It's nice to start the year off with a few looming projects taken care of. Earlier I finally glued Cinderella's hand back on after her fall during the earthquake.

We can all surely find many things to be thankful for even if our year included some rough spots. Here's just a few things I am thanking the Creator for in light of 2011, in no particular order~

a partner in life who faithfully leads us as priest, provider and protector
healthy, growing children

our ministry at the assisted living and the beautiful people there
finding local sources for organic grass fed beef
the new butcher shop where we get dairy from grass fed cows

family and friends to love and support us and whom we can love and support

a special overnight celebration with my oldest girl
3 terrific vacations, celebrating both sides of the family and our final gift from my MIL
vehicles that are older but paid for and running smooth
God leading us to genuine Christian mechanics and showing us we can't trust the Nissan dealerships in our area.

working through some physical problems naturally
my husband's new lease on life with physical fitness and healthy eating
our faithful companion still with us even though he's struggling at times

Gluten-free Coconut Macaroons

For all you GF folks, I found this recipe at Moneywise Mom's and wanted to share it with you. I hope it is helpful to somebody! She used Bob's which does have a tree nut risk most likely. I used to like using sweet rice flour, though it's not nutritious really.

Gluten-Free Coconut Macaroons
(adapted from this recipe)

1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened

1/3 cup sour cream

3/4 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla

1 1/4 cups gluten-free flour (I used Bob’s Red Mill All Purpose GF Baking Flour)
1/4 tsp xanthan gum

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

5 cups sweetened coconut flakes, divided

Mix butter, sour cream and sugar in large bowl until well blended. Add egg and vanilla. Beat well. Stir together flour, xanthan gum, baking powder and salt; gradually add to butter mixture, beating until well blended. Stir in 3 cups coconut.

Cover and refrigerate 1 hour or until firm enough to handle. Heat oven to 350. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll balls in remaining 2 cups coconut. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven; cool 1 minute before carefully removing from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

Sitting with the laptop, a cozy fire going, beautiful Christmas tree lit up, subs on the way, Rocky 1 cued in the DVD player, and a yard ready for winter...what could be better? Today was the perfect end to our Christmas break and the perfect beginning of our New Year's weekend! Our man took the day off and we worked together outside allll day doing a few much-anticipated projects. The raspberry garden is trimmed and covered with leaves, the garage is beautiful, the shed is freshly organized with glue traps for the black widows and breeding camel-back crickets, the dog kennel has been de-chickened from when we incubated a few dozen eggs for science, and some of the holly bush has been removed by the back porch. Life is good, I tell ya! The kids had a tremendous day playing in their country dress-up clothes nearly the whole time, though they did cover the berry bushes with leaves and help by gathering a ton of kindling and fuel wood incase January and February are cold. Coupled with the shed (my project), the joy of watching and listening to our babes play for hours on end was glorious. This mild winter is not going to waste! For tomorrow I anticipate a nice bike ride before delving into the New Year's Eve feast featuring Hasenpfeffer. God has blessed us in 2011 with a beautiful year. May He watch over and guide all His children clearly in 2012.

The sad reality is that it is very hard for anyone decent to get nominated because of the media.

Bachman would have been ok but she doesn't come across as a leader, and when she bought into the anti-vaccination rhetoric, it discredited her among many. Not that we would give our kids the HPV vaccine; I do think it is dangerous, but it wasn't a wise move for her to say anything while trying to get elected since the trouble with it is hard to prove on certain levels.

VA is now holding a primary rather than having a convention, so it's very likely we'll see the liberal Republican on the ticket.

Maybe it is age, or how many have gone on before us, or maybe it's existing in a small subculture where finding likeminded friends can be tricky, but I can't say enough about how it makes a body feel when others give of themselves for our benefit. When good people give up their time, choosing you to be with rather than anyone else...what else could matter as much? Today as we visited with our friends at the assisted living near our home, we saw the simplicity of joy in spending time with others. Then we were blessed by good friends who gave us their time, opening their home to our family for the afternoon. The church service afterward was moving. To sing and worship with so many at one time (it was PACKED) makes me think of Heaven. People standing, sitting in aisles, filling the choir loft~all to sing praises to our King together. After we gave, we were given to, and few things make us feel more whole. I think that is how our children feel as well. May God help all of us spend more time with those we love, especially our kids.

There are folks who wish to deny the subtle and not-so-subtle attacks on Christmas, but sadly, here are some facts that show it just isn't so. I am not surprised; the minority is so loud, what they want often happens. I just spent a while reading comments on an article about Romney supporting gays serving openly in the military, using his careful, slick language. The comments were captivating as real people debated the issue; I finally succumbed to posting several replies. The thing is, there really are people who openly and actively mock God. They have no fear of Him, no regard for right and wrong, no understanding of moral absolutes or delayed judgment. We have to be strong, Christians! Don't waste a moment compromising on the truth or embracing neutrality when souls are at stake. This is a season where we can't focus enough on the truth of God's plan for redemption. Stores, Santa, Stockings...they can all rob Him of glory and rob us of opportunities to share God's love, or we can find ways to springboard truth into this dark world through whatever means available.

Some Things Change, Some Stay the Same

Have you ever thought about personal growth in Christ and how it probably should impact many things in life? Weeks ago I was talking with a friend about this issue, and we touched on friendships. How can all friendships possibly remain the same if both are Christians and growing? If each of us is on our own path, growing and following the Lord according to what He has for us, it is likely we're not going to continually be in the same place at the same time. Sometimes changes are slow and don't really disrupt anything, but some things, like biblical submission to a husband, can be pretty radical depending on the subjects involved.

If a woman has had a friendship with someone who didn't believe in biblical submission, and she is trying to grow in that area, it is only a matter of time before difficulties arise, especially if her friend is hostile to the idea. We need to be able to confide and get advice with intimate relationships, as well as be willing to listen and give advice. Everyone goes through seasons, but I'm sure we've each had situations where the writing on the wall reveals two very divergent paths being taken.

There was a time I thought lifelong friendships were a goal to strive toward, but the older I get the more it's apparent sometimes that means we are stagnant in our walk with the Lord or we are holding someone back because of being in different places or traveling at different paces. Of course, not every relationship needs to be bothered for such details, only those where we go for support and help to get through life's trials. I know for me there have been seasons where I'm doing most of the supporting with those I interact with, as well as seasons where I'm in need of more support. It is a unique friendship where the seasons ebb and flow, and roles alternate accordingly from giver to taker, encourager to downcast, spiritual giant to follower. As with marriage, the giving and taking keeps it real and makes it last. Getting into a rut of how the relationship dynamic 'has to go' is dangerous because that ensures someone won't grow for fear of upsetting the balance. We have to be free to change in our relationships. For this reason marrying someone of the same faith is critical. At least if you are moving at different paces, you are on the same road!

This reminds me of how relationships change with us and our relatives as we grow. An aunt we were close to as a young child has a way of relating to us that needs to change when we are grown. Managing that requires serious work and can be uncomforable. It rarely 'just happens'.

So how about you? As the Christmas celebrations draw near, will you have to resume a certain role to keep the day peaceful? What about with friends, both yours and your children's? As 2012 approaches, are you aware of relationships that are holding you down or hindering your kid's growth? Are you coming out of a season of 'taking' and need to find areas where you can give more? Or are you entering or holding steady in a zone of difficulty and need to be surrounded by supporting people?

God bless us all, and may He lead us clearly to grow in the ways we are ready to grow and enable us to help our children grow in the ways they are ready for.

Don't Quit

Since my own words fail me right now, I was searching for poems on 'change'...not the kind that jingles. The kind you have to sit by and watch- angered, frustrated, unable to impact to the degree you want, change. And this poem came up in my search; I've not read this for close to 20 years. It was on my refrigerator for many years and until tonight, I'd forgotten all about it. Even though it's not on the topic I was searching for, here it is, because it is good, and in a way, it works for the 'change' issue.

Trouble Getting to Sleep Early Enough?

I've read that sleep during the hours before midnight is essential to good health, that even if we get 8 hrs, if those are AFTER midnight, the quality isn't as high. It's been years, so tracking that information down will take longer than I want to give to this post. What I do want to share is what has worked for me when I've fallen into a terrible rut of being awake until 1 or 2 or 3 am. Since my wake time can't fluctuate wildly, the later bedtime means less sleep, like it does for many of you reading. I've not taken melatonin to get to sleep because generally the problem, as I see it for me, is lack of discipline or will. But I've noticed however, on more than one occasion, drinking more grass-fed dairy results in an earlier bedtime. Also, taking a whole food supplement like Life's Fortune allows an earlier bedtime. It could be nutrition plays into what we choose to do when bedtime rolls around. Maybe it's a coincidence. I'm not really inclined to figure it out, but only wanted to share what experientially has occurred here in the hope it will help someone else get those zzz's they crave but get elusive from time to time!

Is Ignorance Really Bliss?

The phrase “ignorance is bliss” supposedly found its origin in a Thomas Gray poem of 1742 called “Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College.” Be that as it may, is it really advisable to turn a deaf ear to God’s prophetic warnings? Another saying, “what you don’t know won’t hurt you,” seems to dominate today’s society toward God’s warnings that are so evident today. Another, “ignorance of the law excuses no one” comes from Roman law, signifying that all are without excuse under the law.

Faithful followers of Christ are working hard to identify the warnings of God to a world that is being prepared for judgment. Yet, I am reminded of Proverbs 23:9 which says, “Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.” I hear and read prophetic teachers of today patiently revealing what our Lord has said will occur in the last days, but few are listening, just as those in the days of Noah. Only fools do not listen. Should the prophetic voices be silenced or continue proclaiming God’s warnings to a deaf world? Obviously, the message must continue. Some will listen. Therefore, some will be saved from what God has in store for this fallen world.

Jesus said, “And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” (Luke 21:24) The completion of the “times of the Gentiles” is quickly approaching, but most people continue through life with a deaf ear, laughing off the cry of the watchmen on the wall.

Iran

is almost ready to introduce its first nuclear onslaught upon the world. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has vowed to blast Israel into the sea. The wise believe him, and Israel is in the pounce position, like a cat, ready to strike first.

Record breaking torrential rains, mud slides, earthquakes, extreme cold, extreme heat, hurricanes, riots, economic collapse, and other warnings have dotted the calendar throughout 2011, but few are paying attention.

The ten toes of Daniel’s prophecy are forming before our very eyes, but how many really care?

In my study of God’s Word, the Bible, there is not one incident that I can find where God did not warn those first who were in line for judgment. He is warning us today. Will we be like Nineveh or Jericho?

Every fulfilled prophecy God has uttered has come true right down to every minute detail. That is a 100% accuracy rating. Every prophecy yet to be fulfilled will happen in like manner. Yet mankind never learns from the past. Because of that willful ignorance, many will go headlong into the coming Tribulation, the Lord’s Day, which is rapidly approaching this earth. I suspect there will be some who will realize that what those irritating Christians said was true, but the clock does not run backwards.

No, ignorance is not bliss, what you don’t know can hurt you, and there will be no excuses accepted. If you miss Jesus’ call for His bride (the Rapture you mock), what will be your chance of surviving during this time? The only survival will be to call upon the Lord Jesus Christ to save your soul, but by doing so you will most likely become a martyr since you will immediately be an enemy of the Antichrist. And folks, that is the good news. The bad news is; to die without Jesus now, is to be separated from Him throughout eternity in hell. More bad news is; to experience the seven year judgment that is coming will be a taste of hell, then the real thing, if you yet die without Him during that terrible time.

Know this. Jesus loves you unconditionally, and gave His life as a sacrifice for you. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) He wants you to know Him. “” (Matthew 11:29-30) He wants you to spend eternity with Him in a glorious place that he has prepared just for you. “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:1-2) Come to Him now, and He will call your name when He comes for His Church at the Rapture. “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:3)

I think part of all the mess going on in the world is the reality we need, as a culture, to be more responsible for the food on our tables. We've gotten so far from family farms, and we needed to. Technological advances wouldn't have happened if we were each just working to survive each day, but there has to be a middle ground now. More people are finding ways to buy local or provide for themselves, but we can't oversee EVERY single product.

It would be easy to obsess over the reality that foods we eat are potentially killing us or making us sick. The same goes for vaccinations, which have done a lot of good but can also do a lot of harm.

What is the Christian response to these troubles? I believe we always need to go back to the Word of God and recall what our purpose here is. Why were we created? If we have the assurance we are "sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption" as God tells us in Ephesians, we have a commission to make disciples of all the nations. How we go about that is personal, of course, but we can't deny God is talking to every saved person. As parents, we also need to care for our children. So it's a balance, as are so many things.

I've often said "economic hardship is the mother's milk of prophetic progression." I coined this phrase after noticing that prophecy always unfolds faster during times of economic trouble. Since the world faces a number of financial hurdles in the coming days, I thought it would be important to reflect on the fallout that might result.

There are many reasons I believe we are headed for a financial meltdown. The most pressing factor is all the debt that nations have built up over time. Debts can be forgiven and budgets can be slashed. What can't be avoided is the growth of entitlement programs, which includes Social Security, Medicare, and government pensions. Each year, we spend nearly $866 billion on healthcare alone. This burden is growing by 9 percent per year. By 2020 it will consume nearly half the U.S. federal budget. In the U.S., 40 million families receive food stamps. Nearly 60 percent of the population is in some way dependent on the government for all or a portion of their income.

Sometime in the next few years, we are going to reach a breaking point. Uncle Sam will become incapable of fulfilling the promises he made to millions of people. The most likely warning indicator will be soaring interest rates on bonds. Once investors realize they might lose money on bonds, we will demand higher rates. This scenario has already played out in Europe.

The government can't just say, "Sorry folks, we’re out of money." Millions of people have no back-up plan. They assume that the U.S. Treasury has a magic printing press that allows it to endlessly churn out money.

The culture of government dependency is so ingrained into society, it’s even being promoted on Sesame Street. The producers of the show recently introduced a “food insecure” Muppet named Lily. She worries about her family not having enough money to feed her properly and pitches obtaining free food at school: “Sometimes we can't always afford to buy all the food that we need,” Lily said. “I mean, but we've been finding lots of ways that we can get help... Yeah, for example, at school I get a free breakfast and a lunch...part of the meal plan."

Sesame Street may have noble intentions in teaching children how take advantage of food programs. Liberals fail to realize that they are actually promoting the drug of dependency. There would be an outrage if Sesame Street was teaching kids they can make all their problems go away by smoking crack. Welfare may seem to be a less powerful drug, but has probably destroyed more lives than all other drugs combined. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society have enslaved whole generations of people.

We're now at the stage where the government’s supply of dope is getting strained, and it's having to cut off some of its addicts. Last week, Rachelle Grimmer caused a seven-hour standoff at the Texas Department of Health and Human Services office in Laredo. The event ended with Grimmer fatally shooting herself and her two children. Grimmer was upset that her food stamps application had been rejected, so she decided to end it all.

The top U.S. military commander, Gen. Martin Dempsey, says he is concerned about "the potential for civil unrest" as Europe's financial crisis unfolds. Several EU nations have leaped ahead of the U.S. on the path toward financial meltdown. In Europe, there have been a number of large riots over austerity measures. If people are willing to riot over changes that switch their retirement from age 55 to age 60, there is no telling what they will do if their whole pension is put into question.

The world has endured many financial calamities far worse than what we see today. Judging by the reaction today, you would expect that people were eating each other during the Great Depression, but that didn't happen. The 1930s was a time of profound economic pain, but people survived because they had a moral foundation, and they knew they would starve if they didn’t find some way to support themselves.
There is no doubt in my mind that any repeat of the Great Depression would force governments around the world to declare martial law. Since we face the total collapse of the fiat currency system, we could have a financial calamity that would be the worst in our nation’s history.

There is one factor that would add to the misery, rivaling the predictions of the most pessimistic economists. When the Rapture takes place, at least 40 million Christians will instantly disappear. Since believers are part of the financial backbone of America, our sudden removal would have a devastating impact on the economy. Because the negative consequences of being left behind are so high, I ask everyone with any doubt to rethink where you stand with God.

If you know me IRL, it's apparent why I'm taking time to post this in the morning rather than at night. The title of the post (not mine, the official one) makes me smile because not too long ago a woman a few years younger than I am was horrified to learn I do not have any sort of Blackberry or Ipod Touch or Smart Phone. She was truly, visibly astounded and exclaimed, "How do you live???" Others saw this and we laugh about it from time to time. Somehow my husband and I share an older pink flip phone that doesn't have a texting plan. Sure, people ask if we put out the candles before bed. We tell folks how we fire up the generator to make a call from the house...and we haven't had TV for over a decade now. And yet, we thrive and are content. :)

A Reason for Grace

We've probably all heard the sweet sayings about being kinder to someone than we feel because everyone is fighting some sort of battle, right? Recently at the lab when I was getting blood drawn, I read a whole little poem to that effect. Then my husband's excellent Sunday School lesson touched on a truth that caused me to think about extremes in our personality, and how we really need to bear with one another because at various times in life, we might be approaching a transition and so, the rough edges could be presenting themselves more than at other times.

The way we were each raised has a lot to do with how we respond to the gospel and the changes God impresses on our hearts once we are saved. For example, I noticed in college that kids who were raised in Christian homes were able to listen to secular music with what seemed like no problem. It wasn't anything really bad, just stuff like Billy Joel. Those of us saved later in life, such as young 20's, were called to give up secular music. It was a hindrance because we'd lived in sin with those songs. I'll never forget how strongly it was impressed on me to get rid of my music collection about 6 months after I'd accepted Christ. My pastor told me God was making me a disciple, and I was ecstatic (of course I probably got apostle and disciple confused back then LOL). While I don't listen to secular music with any hint of regularity, it can happen now without flooding my mind with reminders of days I'd rather forget. I've come back more to the middle.

The swinging pendulum of 'working out our faith' is a key reason we need to extend grace, and it is also a key reason we need to consider exercising temperance when we are smitten with a new 'theological' truth or personal conviction. I am the first to admit my passionate side can, and has, gotten the better of me on more than one occasion. But I'm realizing many people who don't seem to be enthralled with what I am, when I am, have possibly already dealt with 'it', have already considered and dismissed 'it' for valid reasons, or are just dealing with something else and will probably hit 'my' issue at a later time. If we all kept this in mind, my guess is there'd be more forbearance all around and less conflict within the church.

Just think, we might meet someone while their pendulum is to the far right or left of an issue, and if we make a fast judgement to the negative, we could miss out on a wonderful relationship.

Many years ago my 1963 113 Superbeetle donned a sticker that read, "Recycle or Die," and I meant it. Unfortunately, not in the sense that if we don't recycle we'll use all of our non-renewable natural resources so will hence, perish prematurely. No, I pretty much considered non-recyclers enemies...you get the drift. I'd volunteered at the first recycling center in the USA according to my environmental science teacher. Plans for a Lorax tattoo were only waiting for me to reach age 21 since I figured I'd be mature enough by then to make such a decision. With unshaved legs and arm pits, no bra and Birkenstocks, my life was set on a course that felt powerful and individual. When it was intercepted with the gospel, there were fireworks. My worldview was rocked on every possible level. The only 'leftish' issues I never supported were abortion and evolution. So you can well imagine that once Christ came into my life, my environmental activism took quite a significant back seat.

For the better part of 15 years, as a follower of Christ, I could not recycle. It physically bothered me to try and go down that path. I'd been responsible for transforming many people into avid recyclers and here I was with three kids unable to perform this basic act of wise trash removal. If someone met me during those years, they surely could have passed all sort of judgment on my motives. They could have wrongly thought my pendulum had never moved on the issue or that it had long ago settled into position. But God has a way of healing and bringing wholeness to every part of our past, and now I'm able to teach my children about good stewardship of this passing-away Earth. They know the truth about the man made global warming debacle, but they also know that God gave us this planet as a gift and we need to treat it as such.

I've learned, without worshipping animals, we can be advocates for responsible treatment of our food sources, realizing animals treated with respect will produce healthier food. But food and recycling aren't my main points obviously. These issues have merely been a tool to remind me afresh that everyone is fighting some sort of battle, or battles, and if I love someone, I need to determine to be patient while they fight there's. Sure it is easier to give up on a friend when they question or doubt something we do, but is that God's way? I don't think so. I think running away is a sad, bad habit and more of us, myself included, need to remember to fight the 'good' fight and finish our course, keeping the faith, bearing one another's burdens. So the next time you start a new home based business, don't drop a friend if they are less than enthusiastic at first. It might take time for them to see how important the issue is to you because of what they are going through or have gone through. ☺

We Need A Little Christmas-Hallelujah, heut' ist Weihnacht

As we headed north to celebrate Christmas with my mom's side of the family, we were fortunate to find a classic Christmas music station. These lyrics, unfamiliar even though the tune wasn't, resonated in my soul. I don't know how I've missed them all these years. Maybe because it wasn't time to hear them.

For I've grown a little leaner,
Grown a little colder,
Grown a little sadder,
Grown a little older,

My thoughts drifted to years gone by where so many who are now gone, were not. The list keeps growing, and really understanding what that means gives life a whole new flavor.

So I wondered as we were all converging, if others got time to pontificate, and if they did, what was their focus?

My thoughts did the rare, crystal clear replay of saying goodbye for the last time to my mom shortly after Christmas 15 years ago...

Like so many mom's, mine loved Christmas.

And my thoughts went to the last goodbye with my second mother, my husband's mom, just a little after Christmas last year.

Time to Leave A Beka Math

With my oldest child, I used Christian Liberty Press math for 1st grade, Bob Jones for 2nd, and then we jumped into Saxon at 3rd grade. Realizing a change was in order for the second child, we started with A Beka in K and have used it up until today for 3rd grade.

What has happened? Well, we noticed in prior years, particularly last year, A Beka introduces new concepts before the previous one has been sufficiently mastered. Division begins before multiplication has been practiced enough, subtraction begins before addition is mastered, and division with remainders starts before regular division is mastered. While the worksheets have review on them, the overall structure of the curriculum is just not working for us anymore. I'm tired of putting the curriculum aside to do drill sheets.

Thankfully, we kept our Saxon and so today, I went through each lesson to see what my student knows in order to determine where to start. It is a bit disheartening when you need to start a new book in the midst of a year, especially when the material is so different. Saxon introduces estimating, geometry, far more solving for the unknowns and more word problems in lessons 16-30 than A Beka 3rd grade. By lesson 42 A Beka 3rd hasn't done much of any of those, if anything. The programs have very different approaches of when to introduce what.

What I also like is that Saxon gives a more scripted, step by step approach to new concepts, and the mental math is far more challenging than A Beka's drill sheets and little bit of mental exercises. I also like how Saxon introduces multiplication. The 0's, 1's, 2's and 5's are started with. Then there is a break from multiplication and when it returns, the 9's are taught, showing the pattern between the multiplication and addition, which helps the student learn and understand. I'd forgotten why I loved Saxon so much and in hindsight, wish I'd just started this year as we did with our oldest when she was in 3rd grade. It is easy to slack off with children after the first born, for various reasons.

In sum, I'll stick with A Beka for K, 1st and maybe 2nd, but will have to seriously evaluate it for the latter. For 3rd, we're going to stick with Saxon 54.

Edited to add--something A Beka does that I like are many examples of multiple operation problems that are meant to be done mentally. They are in the Teacher's Manual and I like them very much.

We Should Have the Month Off

I need to know if there is anyone else out there who thinks the month of December should be school-free? Sure, it is ridiculous thinking, but sooo delightful to indulge for just a few bloggy moments.

A plethora of activities swirl around for our time during December. Between making gifts, filling out old-fashioned cards (I like to give a little shout out to verse and cursive), preparing for parties, attending parties, warding off sickness, shopping, taking kids shopping, decorating, holiday haircuts, cleaning for company, baking, and taking part in children's various holiday extravaganza's...where is the time for quality schooling? Add to that needing to get vehicles inspected because one fateful year ~~you~~ some genius messed up and missed doing them in November...there is really no way to get full days in like you want! And doing all of those things during vacation sure ruins the concept of VACATION. Except for the baking and making gifts, and possibly visiting those who don't get much company throughout the holidays...those are great vacation activities to do with the family, but waiting until school break to decorate is a mite late for my blood. But when shall it get done with weekends all full?

I don't know. It's going to have to be a day that school gets shortened heavily I think. Time doesn't just appear like I wish it would sometimes!
